Turnitin Introduces iThenticate 2.0 and a New Similarity Report

Academic integrity solutions company Turnitin has announced its iThenticate 2.0 program, along with a redesigned and improved Similarity Report, available across its writing integrity products. iThenticate 2.0 will screen over 14 million documents a year in scholarly manuscripts and 97% of the top 10,000 journals, the company said.

The new Similarity Report is enabled for all iThenticate 2.0 Originality Check, Similarity, and Originality customers for free until Jan. 1, 2024, after which only customers with Originality licenses will have access to AI writing detection. The Similarity Report is in beta for Turnitin Feedback Studio and Feedback Studio with Originality.

iThenticate 2.0 has been updated with these features for free until after January:

  • Access to AI Writing Insights to identify AI-generated text;
  • New Similarity Report identification of "research misconduct," such as "text recycling and redundant or duplicate publication";
  • Upgraded collaboration for user groups to access and review files and folders to help the editing and approval process;
  • Upgraded exclusion abilities for reviewers to discount some matches to create better accuracy in a similarity score; and
  • A new flags panel that reveals text manipulation used to bypass similarity detection.

The new Similarity Report has "an intuitive interface and new categorization of match types" to make it easier to understand and use in teaching students better writing skills. These features include:

  • Matches based on citations, quotations, and text overlap;
  • Identification of ChatGPT use;
  • In-app guidance, mobile use options, and assistive technology support;
  • Integrity insights for teachers to distinguish between student intended plagiarism and misunderstanding and incorporate helpful feedback in teaching writing skills.

Turnitin said its model was trained on GPT-3 and GPT 3.5, but can detect GPT-4-generated text "most of the time."
