U of Scranton to Act as Internet2 Hub for Eastern Pennsylvania

The University of Scranton is building a 100 Mbps intercity dedicated link to bring Internet2 access to schools, hospitals, and government organizations in the Scranton, Pa., area. The university will use the connection to create an Internet2 hub for other local Scranton educational and research institutions. The school’s technology contractor on the deal is TelCove Inc., a telecom services provider.

Connie Wisdo, director of technology development and innovation at the school, said the deal was already pulling economic interest. "With the…hub now open, a regional Scranton Internet2 community is already emerging to take advantage of unique educational opportunities, and to collaborate on research studies." Support for Internet2 on campus is a joint effort between the university's Information Resources Division and the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE).

University of Bristol to Move Up Supercomputing Charts

The University of Bristol (UK) said it will purchase several new high-performance supercomputers from ClusterVision, IBM, and ClearSpeed Inc. The largest of these new systems will be among the fastest university research computers in the UK and is also expected to be one of the top 100 computers of its type in the world.

The contract was awarded to a ClusterVision-led consortium, working with IBM and ClearSpeed Technology. The deal is the first and also the largest to be awarded under a collaborative procurement requirement managed by Tony Newjem, purchasing director of Heriot-Watt University for the UK Science Research Investment Fund (SRIF) 3 Project in the UK.

"This initiative puts Bristol at the forefront of high-performance computing," said Professor David May, head of the computer science at the university. "The impact of these systems will be enormous – right across all disciplines – turning data into knowledge. It will influence both research and teaching. Universities that understand this will be the most competitive in the 21st century."
