Jackson State and Teles Demo Quick-Fix Comm System

Jackson State University in Mississippi and Teles USA have conducted the first public demonstration of a system that allows first responders to reestablish phone and data communications quickly in the event of a catastrophe. The Transmission Alternatives Link Kit, or "TALK Box," was developed at Jackson State's Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence with the use of components from Teles.

Teles partner Bandtel provided VoIP services during the event, connecting the TALK Box to the Internet.

Robert Whalin, director of the university's Center for Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure, and Emergency Management, declared the TALK Box demonstration an "unqualified success."

Lead researcher Gordon Skelton agreed, touting the cooperation between Teles, Jackson State, and the United States Army's Redstone Army Arsenal. "We've clearly demonstrated the value of collaboration between the academic, military, and corporate community in providing solutions that bridge communities, save money, and save lives. We're very excited about continuing to work with Teles in developing advanced telecommunications solutions for homeland security and disaster preparedness."
