Bauman Moscow State Technical U, IBM Patner To Explore Smarter Cities

Bauman Moscow State Technical University has partnered with IBM to launch a Smarter Cities Development and Education Center at the school's Moscow campus.

The center will give "students the chance to explore and apply IBM's latest technologies and solutions to improve the management of urban infrastructure and support the development of smarter cities," according to information released by the company.

A central piece of the project will be the Intelligent Operations Center (IOC) for Smarter Cities, software designed to monitor and manage municipal services and improve operational efficiencies and planning.

Features of the IOC include:

  • Integration of city services in a central point of command;
  • Situation and incident reporting and tracking;
  • Real-time communication and collaboration tools;
  • Mobile access; and
  • Analytics and asset management tools designed to make "key performance indicators" more visible.

Aligned with the "government's priorities for the modernization and technological development of urban centers across the country," the center will explore integrating data from the country's Global Navigation Satellite System as one of its first projects, according to information released by IBM.

"Creating this center gives rise to a new professional direction for our graduates," said Anatoly Alexandrov, rector at Bauman Moscow State Technical University.  "This collaboration with IBM provides our graduates with skills that we believe will be in significant demand as Russia seeks to create smarter cities and increase its global economic competitiveness."

Previously, IBM has partnered with Ireland's Industrial Development Agency and the University of Guadalajara to build smarter cities centers in Ireland and Mexico.

Founded in 1830, Bauman Moscow State Technical University serves approximately 18,000 students with 3,500 faculty members.
