Gale Intros Usage Purchase Model for E-books

A new purchasing model from education publisher Gale -- dubbed Usage-driven Acquisition (UDA) -- enables college and university libraries to buy e-books from Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) according to actual usage.

To participate, libraries make a minimum deposit and receive a six-month full access subscription to Gale and Gale imprint e-books. When the subscription expires, the "e-books with the greatest usage will be automatically added permanently to the library's GVRL collection and deducted from the library's initial deposit," according to a statement from Gale. The library receives unlimited, simultaneous use of the title upon purchase.

Gale is working with third party publishers to add new titles into the program. Additional information about the GVRL or UDA model is available online.
