U British Columbia Opts for DLAN on Emergency Management

In preparation for a major event held at its campus, the University of British Columbia Vancouver opted into a new emergency operations and incident management system. The institution chose DisasterLAN from Buffalo Computer Graphics for use by the institution's Security Operations staff. The university is home to 50,000 students, 14,000 staff and faculty members and 9,000 additional residents who also live in the university community.

Recently, the campus hosted many of the sporting events for the Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games, which drew several thousand athletes and supporters. The new system was installed and staff trained in time for that influx of visitors.

DisasterLAN provides a Web-based console for coordinating the workflow of emergency responders in an emergency situation. Integrated modules provide for watch command activities, internal communications and mass notifications, creation of incident action plans, GIS mapping and other functionality.

"We believe DisasterLAN will meet the needs of today's Vancouver campus and has the flexibility to adapt to the changing requirements of tomorrow," said Reg Fountain, manager of Emergency Management and Continuity Planning. "We have also been impressed with the support from BCG staff  in tailoring this product to our requirements as well as in their support with its installation and the ongoing training of our...staff."

Colgate University is also a DLAN institutional customer.
