U New Mexico Turns To Mobile App for Improved Safety
The University of New Mexico (UNM) has deployed a mobile app in an effort to better ensure the safety of 27,000 students.
The school has adopted Rave Guardian, which allows students to set up a virtual safety network comprising roommates, friends, family and campus safety personnel. Users can then create "safety timer" sessions, which allow members of their network to check in on them to monitor their location and status updates. Campus safety is notified if the user hits a panic button in the app or if the timer expires.
"The decision to purchase Rave Guardian was driven by our desire to make UNM the safest campus possible for all members of our community," said Tomas Aguirre, dean of students at University of New Mexico, in a prepared statement. "This cutting-edge technology allows users to convert their smart phone into a mobile blue phone and includes innovative features like a panic button, tip texting, personal guardians and a safety timer and profile."
"LoboGuardian allows users to bring alerting capabilities with them," added Byron Piatt, emergency manager at UNM. "In the event a user has an emergency, critical information will be provided to those you trust and designate to help them more quickly respond and help you."
