Irkutsk State To Train Oil and Gas Students on Paradigm Software

Students prepare for geoscience careers using advanced reservoir characterization technology

Irkutsk State Technical University in Eastern Siberia will be running well log and petrophysical analysis software through a donation from Paradigm, which publishes global oil and natural gas exploration and production applications.

"Paradigm Geolog has great value in the education of oil and gas industry specialists," said Alexander Georgievich Dmitriev, chair, geophysics & geoinformatics. "With the help of this software, students can acquire well logging, data processing, and interpretation skills, which are inherent requirements for modern [exploration and production] professionals."

The donation includes five software licenses for Geolog, which enables users to perform petrophysical analysis and formation evaluation. Each license will also include the use of Paradigm's Determin for deterministic petrophysics and Loglan for well log programming. The software will be implemented in a newly equipped laboratory funded by a grant from Russian oil company TNK-BP.

According to the company, the volume of exploration work in the Eastern Siberia region has increased by 40 percent over the last several years.

Irkutsk State Technical University has about 35,000 students.
