Community College of Rhode Island Standardizes Student Response Devices
More than 1,000 students at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) will begin using new student response devices when classes resume this fall. The New England community college chose Turning Technologies' ResponseCard NXT for campuswide deployment following an evaluation pilot with members of the faculty.
Faculty representing ten different disciplines participated in the pilot program. Among the reasons the committee chose Turning Technologies' solution were its PowerPoint add-in, portability, numeric and text entry capabilities, and pedagogical support, according to a statement released this week from the company.
"Students want to learn in different ways and we want faculty to be thinking differently about teaching," said Jeanne Mullaney, assessment coordinator at CCRI, in a prepared statement. "It’s my priority to support faculty with easy-to-use tools that will assist in improving student learning outcomes."
ResponseCard NXT comes with cell phone style text entry for short answer and essay questions. When used with TurningPoint software, instructors can poll from PowerPoint or "administer self-paced testing for individual summative assessment."
