North Carolina State Rolls Out Automated BYOD Onboarding System

North Carolina State University has announced plans to automate mobile device registration and provide secure onboarding of devices connecting to its wireless network.

NCSU needed an automated system for students, faculty, and guests to connect to its wireless network securely. To solve the problem, the university decided to implement the XpressConnect Enrollment System (ES) from Cloudpath Networks.

XpressConnect ES provides a single point of entry for all non-domain devices, including BYOD and IT-owned devices entering the wireless network. The system is designed to save time for the university`s IT team by letting people connect their mobile devices to the wireless network automatically without assistance from IT, but the university will retain control of network security.

XpressConnect ES supports traditional policies, such as Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft CA integration, as well as new policy capabilities, such as integration with LinkedIn, Facebook, Google, and other external sources.

Other features of XpressConnect ES include:

  • Automated device configuration, including WiFi, wired 802.1X, certificates, security settings, and web proxies;
  • Support for WPA2-Enterprise WiFi for guests while maintaining security policies and segregation;
  • Differentiation of BYOD and IT-owned devices by ownership, not device type;
  • TLS authentication for non-domain devices; and
  • Support for automated EAP-TLS capabilities on Windows, Mac, Ubuntu, iOS, and Android devices.

North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, is a public research university serving nearly 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students and employing nearly 2,300 faculty members.
