University of Washington Upgrades Engineering Lab

The University of Washington's Electrical Engineering Department is upgrading the electronic testing equipment in its Embedded Systems Laboratory. The teaching lab aims to provide a real-world environment for students to learn about the design, debug, and testing issues common in this field.

The university has contracted with Agilent to supply the new equipment. The institution has acquired 12 Agilent InfiniiVision 4000 X-Series oscilloscopes. The 350-MHz touchscreen devices come with "four analog and 16 digital channels," according to a statement from Agilent.

"The quantity and nature of signals that must be recognized and understood frequently challenge the equipment used to measure them," said Jim Peckol, principal lecturer of the electrical engineering department, in a prepared statement. Students will use the devices to practice working with systems that "span analog and digital domains."

Each oscilloscope comes with a 12.1-inch touchscreen, InfiniiScan Zone touch trigger technology, and "1-million-waveforms/sec update rate, segmented memory and MegaZoom IV smart memory technology." The 4000 X-series devices also include oscilloscope channels, logic channels, digital voltmeter, serial protocol analyzer, and dual-channel WaveGen waveform generator.

Additional information about the oscilloscopes is available at the company's Web site.
