Student Reporters Use Mobile App for Video Newsgathering

Student reporters at Lynn University, located in Boca Raton, FL, are using a new tool to provide news coverage of campus events for their new television station. The station delivers live and on-demand video through the school's web site.

Lynn U has adopted LIVE+, a mobile app from Ontario, Canada-based Dejero, a developer of electronic newsgathering solutions. The app, loaded onto 10 iPad minis owned by the journalism department, allows reporters to record and transmit video – using a WiFi connection -- to the television station. The tablets will be used to cover on- and off-campus events, including a spring performance by the school's drama department at American College Dublin, in Ireland.

The new tool enables the university to capture field content without having to invest in costly broadcasting equipment, according to David Jaffe, dean of the College of International Communication at the institution.

"From my years working in the broadcast industry, I could immediately see the value of a solution that would allow us to gather high-quality video content from the field without the huge capital expense of buying and maintaining microwave or satellite equipment," said Jaffe, in a prepared statement from Dejero. "And for a tuition-driven university such as ours, keeping costs down for our students is very important."

Lynn University is a private institution serving more than 2,000 students. The school's television station is operated by the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn College of International Communication.
