Purdue U, Indianapolis Public Schools to Open STEM Charter School

Indiana-based Purdue University is working with Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) to build a STEM-focused charter school, scheduled to open next year.

Purdue Polytechnic High School will be located in downtown Indianapolis and chartered by the City of Indianapolis. The high school will implement problem- and project-based learning, emphasizing STEM instruction for the first two years of its curriculum, according to a Purdue University News report.

Purdue partnered with IPS in 2014 to increase the pipeline of students majoring in STEM and entering STEM careers. Purdue President Mitch Daniels told Purdue that if the new high school succeeds, the university would hope to open similar high schools throughout Indiana cities.

Now through Feb. 3, Purdue Polytechnic High School is accepting applications for its inaugural Fall 2017. Space is limited with 150 seats available the first year. Additional freshman classes will be added each year after, with an final goal of 600 students enrolled in grades 9–12. To apply or learn more, visit the Purdue U site.
