Purdue University on Thursday signed a five-year agreement with Infosys, an IT outsourcing firm based in India, to provide classes and training to approximately 10,000 American employees.

“The partnership will combine Infosys’ aspiration to grow and train its workforce in the United States with Purdue’s desire to increase educational and real-world opportunities for its students within the rapidly evolving technology industry,” according to a university statement. Notably, out of the 10,000 employees that Infosys plans to hire, approximately 2,000 will be based in Indiana, where the company is opening its first tech and innovation hub in the U.S.

Purdue and Infosys will work together to develop course materials in digital agriculture, cybersecurity, biopharma analytics, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence and data analytics. Trainings will be held on the West Lafayette campus and will be geared toward new recruits, but there will also be online courses available to existing Infosys employees.

In addition, Purdue plans to open a center that will investigate interdisciplinary solutions to address select business challenges facing Infosys clients, the university said.

"Today’s announcement represents another step forward in our commitment to boosting American innovation and in doing our part to shrink the IT skills gap through investments in training and education,” said Suresh Garimella, executive vice president for research and partnerships at Purdue and a professor of mechanical engineering, in the statement. “We are proud to partner with a leading American university like Purdue that is at the forefront of educating and training students on the most in-demand technology skills."
