New Video Courseware Replaces Traditional Textbook
JoVE, a publisher of video learning resources for STEM topics, has introduced a new set of biology courseware designed to completely replace the traditional textbook. Now in beta, JoVE Core "presents scientific concepts through more than 400 concise animated videos and text descriptions," organized in six sections and 33 chapters, according to a news announcement. Additional features include customizable interactive quizzes and in-book note-taking.
Topics covered in the book: biology fundamentals such as macromolecules and the chemistry of life; cellular processes, including cellular respiration, metabolism and photosynthesis; genetics, including DNA structure and function, biotechnology, gene expression and viruses; human biology; ecology; and evolution. Content was created by Ph.D.-level scientists.
"In the current digital age, students do not use textbook as their first option, they reach for their phone. JoVE's forward thinking to create a digital-only biology experience could help overcome some of these misgivings by becoming the first place students turn to," commented Michael Vieth, senior instructor of biology at Quinnipiac University, in a statement.
