Learning Machine Update Brings Together Blockcerts and Open Badges

The Learning Machine Issuing System can now be used for both Blockcerts and IMS-compliant Open Badges. The means education providers can "consolidate issuing both micro-credentials and blockchain-secured official records from the same system," according to a news announcement.

Open Badges provide a way to document individual achievements, competencies and progress toward a larger goal (such as a credential or degree). Blockcerts are designed for high-stakes credentials such as transcripts, enrollment verification and diplomas, and use blockchain technology for a higher level of security. "One of the things education and training providers keep telling us is that they want to simplify records management and keep all their credentials in one place," explained Natalie Smolenski, senior vice president of business development for Learning Machine, in a statement. "We also know that many providers don't just issue one type of credential; they want to issue secure official records, but also document progress along the way." By combining Blockcerts and Open Badges in one system, the Learning Machine Issuing System streamlines that issuing process.
