CSU Channel Islands Installs Video Capture for Psychology Research

Psychology students and faculty at California State University Channel Islands can now record video and audio during behavioral studies research, thanks to new technology in the department's laboratory and observation rooms. The university recently worked with BTX Technologies to install the Reach video capture system, an all-in-one capture, streaming, recording and distribution appliance.

CSUCI's setup comprises two pan-tilt-zoom cameras and the Reach Bee8 appliance, controlled from Manager Lite or the Reach Video App, which run on a PC or iPad outside of the observation rooms, according to a news release. Psychology department researchers can start or stop recording, control screen layout, recall individual camera presets or control each camera independently.

The Reach Bee8 appliance can deliver live RTSP and RTMP streams concurrently, allowing users to directly view live content; remote viewers can access the content live through a service like Wowza or YouTube. The product also records a high-profile MP4 file to support on-demand video, or can record to a flash drive connected via USB2.0 port.

"Programs like ours are critical in academia to get students actively involved in research which enhances their future educational opportunities as well as strengthens the college program itself," commented Virgil Adams III, a professor of psychology at the university, in a statement. "With this Reach equipment, there is now a new set of flexible applications that gives students cutting edge experiences while they experiment with more creative ways to capture information. Bottom line, video and audio recording in a systematic way that can be preserved and reviewed is paramount in behavioral studies programs. Additionally, this aids faculty in their research."
